There’s something about Yorkshire food culture. It’s honest, generous, and proudly seasonal. For visitors arriving in Yorkshire, whether that’s for a weekend escape, a foodie holiday, or a special event, discovering the region through its produce is one of the most rewarding experiences.
Yorkshire has long been celebrated for its amazing food, but in recent years it has firmly established itself on the national and international food map. With 10 Michelin-starred restaurants across the county, Yorkshire is now recognised as one of the UK’s leading fine-dining regions – proving that exceptional food can thrive alongside strong agricultural traditions and local craftsmanship.
But Yorkshire’s food story is not only about fine dining. It’s about the ingredients, the people behind them, and the traditions that shape the region. We’re so lucky to have many local producers right on our doorstep, and you’ll see and hear all about their produce at The Cook’s Place. We’re not shy to share!
Flavours that define Yorkshire
Yorkshire food culture would be incomplete without mentioning the iconic produce that is linked with the county. So here’s a few of our favourites…
Forced Rhubarb & The Rhubarb Triangle
Just south of here lies the famous Rhubarb Triangle, an area between Wakefield, Leeds and Morley that has become legendary for its production of forced rhubarb. Grown in darkened sheds and harvested by candlelight during the winter months, Yorkshire forced rhubarb is prized for its vivid pink colour and delicate sweetness. You’ll find it on many a menu in the region – from cocktails and flavoured gins to crumbles and jams!
Wensleydale Cheese
Few ingredients are more recognisable than Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. Creamy, crumbly and beautifully versatile, it remains one of the county’s most celebrated foods. Whether paired with fruitcake (do give it a try!), melted into seasonal dishes, or enjoyed simply on a cheeseboard with local chutneys, we love this artisan cheese.
York’s chocolate-making tradition
Visitors are often surprised to discover York’s remarkable chocolate heritage. The city became internationally known through pioneering chocolate makers including Rowntree’s and Terry’s, whose creations shaped British confectionery for generations.
Today, York still embraces that sweet legacy through independent chocolatiers, chocolate tours and craft producers who continue to celebrate the city’s relationship with the sweet treat.
Malton at the heart of Yorkshire food (and Yorkshire Puddings!)
Here in Malton, Yorkshire’s reputation as a true food destination is impossible to ignore. We even proudly share an icon of Yorkshire food culture with a mural dedicated to Hannah Glasse’s 18th century and original Yorkshire Pudding Recipe! With bustling food markets to independent producers, artisan bakeries, award-winning butchers and passionate growers, food is woven into everyday life.
Join us here at The Cook’s Place for our monthly Cook’s Walk, and you will get the chance to meet these very people on our behind-the-scenes walking tour packed with food, local stories and those hidden gems! Along the way you will uncover the town’s rich history, vibrant food scene, and its unique character. You can book all our events here.
A coastline of delicious sea food
Yorkshire’s coastline is famous for world-class, sustainably caught shellfish, with its delicacies including sweet and succulent lobster. Whether we are serving lobster, or sharing it as part of our Fish & Shellfish Masterclasses, we source ours from The Whitby Catch. As part of their commitment to sustainability, all of their lobsters are sold under Whitby’s Lobster Hatchery’s “Buy one, Release one” scheme. For each lobster sold, a donation is made to the hatchery, allowing a lobster to be bred and reared in captivity, and then released into the wild to replenish stocks.
We also donate to the same scheme for each Fish & Shellfish Masterclass we hold here at The Cook’s Place. So, it’s a win-win when you join us!
And don’t forget about sweet, dressed crab from Whitby too. Whether you have it dressed or in a simple crab sandwich, it is guaranteed to be delicious!
A region best experienced through food
From lively cities to peaceful countryside and wild coastline, Yorkshire is bursting with foodie treats. With amazing chefs, creative makers, and dedicated producers everywhere you look, there’s simply nowhere like Yorkshire when it comes to good food and drink.
Yorkshire invites visitors to slow down, to enjoy long lunches in market towns, discover viral bakeries, browse farm shops, and experience the changing seasons through what’s on the plate.
Whether you’re visiting us here at The Cook’s Place for a cookery class, to be entertained, a private event, or joining us on our monthly Cook’s Walk, the emphasis on local and seasonal food is what makes cooking and dining here feel so connected to the landscape. Menus shift with the seasons, with ingredients sourced nearby, and you can taste the difference. We believe food tastes better when it tells the story of the place it comes from.
